A book on political philosophy suffers no harm from such enlivening and contrasted experiences. Wheu the College Don becomes Town Councillor or parliamentary candidate the exchange is not all loss. The fact that l\Ir. Crossman is not purely academic gives to his work a sense of animation and actuality often wanting to the nicely balanced treatise of the philosophical recluse. A lively concern for the happenings of to-day and to-mo1Tow lends meaning to the thoughts and occurrences of the past. l\fr. Crossman travels easily over a wide tract of time.
