THE articles in this volume have been written by
Sir Walter Lawrence, Bart., G. C. I. E., who wishes to
acknowledge his special indebtedness to Major J. L. Kaye,
late Settlement Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir,
and to Major S. H. Godfrey, C. I.E., who verified the
proofs, added much new matter, and enabled the author
to bring the information up to date.
